Appearance:

Rei's features and appearance are very much in a classic Japanese style. With very long, healthy black hair and black eyes, she also tends to dress traditionally - either in her miko robes or in kimono - though she is known to dress in schoolgirl fashions and in her school uniform when need be as well.

As Sailormars, her sailor uniform (a short-skirted sailor uniform mock) is colored red primarily, as is the jewel in her tiara. She also wears red high heels in this form.

As the princess, Rei dresses in long, flowing royal gowns of expensive but ethereal fabrics.

Personality:

Rei is the leader of her world because she is a leader. She makes her decisions based on the common good, and the "best" solution for all, regardless of her private feelings - though she feels those private emotions deeply.

Rei is compassionate, and able to be forgiving, but she is also a harsh leader. She expects the other senshi to be able to live up to her, and is quick to upbraid them if they do not. Though she is sympathetic to emotion, she is not to hysteria - one of the main sources of conflict between herself and Usagi/Sailormoon.

While Rei is connected to the Prince, earlier in her life she had voiced a slight aversion to romance and men. This seems to have changed as a result of, again, maturity - suggesting that her earlier stance was simply a recognition that she was not ready.

Strongly devoted to her duty, Rei considers this the most important thing of all. To think she has acted irresponsibly or undutifully would be her greatest disappointment in herself. To be considered a faithful soldier would be her greatest pride. Even as the princess, she considers her duty as a senshi as something even more; it is as Sailormars that she fights for her world while the princess guides it.

Abilities/Strengths:

With no special power-ups, Rei is clairvoyant and can sense the presence of evil. As Sailormars, she is able to wield the element of fire. As the Princess, she is able to weild the ginzuishou, a silver crystal of nearly infinite power. Her leadership abilities enable her to keep even the sometimes-fractious sailor senshi working together; people are inspired by her leadership and competence, and trust her abilities.

Weapons:

Rei has the ginzuishou with her, along with her transformation wand that allows her to become Sailormars. Her power over fire is also obviously a weapon - or a potential one.

Weaknesses:

Rei is a model leader, but it can alienate some of those under her command who wish to be her priority when no single person can be, not even Mamoru/the prince.

History:

Hino Rei was a young miko or temple maiden serving at her family's shrine and gifted with the powers of clairvoyancy and the ability to sense evil. Her life progressed very normally until the shrine was attacked by youma, strange and evil creatures. Fortunately, Sailormoon and Sailormercury, two girls with power of their own, appeared in time to defeat it. Their companion Luna - Sailormoon's pet cat - immediately recognized the potential of senshi powers in Rei as well as something more: the girl was very possibly the princess they had been searching for.

After the battle, there was much to talk about, and Mercury was introduced as Mizuno Ami while Sailormoon was revealed to be Tsukino Usagi. Rei became Sailormars, gaining the power over fire in addition to her other abilities, and the senshi's leader. She proved very competent and able, guiding the team smoothly and well as they gained Sailorjupiter (Kino Makoto) and Sailorvenus (Aino Minako). All of them became for all intents and purposes best friends.

The true history of the senshi was also revealed: a millenium ago, they had lived in a kingdom on the Moon ruled over by a gracious queen and her wise and dignified daughter the Moon Princess. When the Moon Kingdom ended, the princess and her bodyguards were reincarnated on earth - along with their enemies from the Dark Kingdom whom they had now been awakened to fight once more. Hino Rei was indeed that princess - she had been given the identity of Mars to keep her safer; the identity of Sailormoon had been given to the captain of her bodyguard - and the guardian of the ginzuishou, a legendary silver crystal of unlimited power. Strong from the start, she was able to reconstitute its powers almost immediately by focusing on it in her meditations.

Incidents such as the attack on the shrine were multiplying just as Rei was trying to put together her personal life. She had been dating Chiba Mamoru even before the formation of the senshi group, and continued to do so - although Tsukino Usagi seemed to be catching more of his eye. While concerned, it was not in Rei's nature to be jealous, and she did her best not to let it distract her. And eventually, he chose Rei's maturity and wisdom over Usagi's admitted charm and sweetness but also childishness and air-headedness. Mamoru was also let in on the group's secrets, Rei revealing her identity to him which let him guess the others. In turn, it was revealed that Mamoru had been a prince of the earth - Prince Endymion - in the days of the Moon Kingdom, and that the Princess and Sailormoon had quarreled over him even then.

When Mamoru was kidnapped by the dark kingdom, Rei faced the hardest decision yet - to give him up. Saving him would endanger too many others and while her love for him was very real and powerful, it could not compromise her ability to make the best decision strategically.

Usagi refused to cooperate with the plan, deciding to rescue Mamoru herself and secure his affection by doing so. Instead, he rebuked her for the foolish move and compromising the plan - and safety - of her leader. Usagi was captured by the shittenou, the four generals of the Dark Kingdom serving under the entity Metallia, their empress. Metallia warped Usagi's memories and made her into something above even the shittenou, a queen of the Dark Kingdom in her own right. The monsters came, overrunning the city of Tokyo, and the generals took the other senshi. And so this new Queen Usagi waited for Rei.

When the two finally met face to face once more, Rei fought with all her strength anyway - that was what made her the leader of her world. But Usagi, as queen of the Dark Kingdom, was too powerful. Rei had one hope left: the ginzuishou. Using too much of its power would hurt and possibly even kill Rei, but if it could cleanse the other girl of her jealousies before it got to that point, everything could go back to how it had been before...

Rei was not to know whether it had; she found herself in Econtra instead.
